Finding the Right Development Model for Your Project
At HiFiBerry, we understand that different customers have different needs. Especially when creating a hardware for your business, there’s no one-size-fits-all development model. That’s why we offer a range of development models to fit everything from off-the-shelf solutions to fully customized designs. Here’s a quick overview of the options:
1. Use Standard Products
Best option for most customers
Our standard products offer the fastest and most cost-effective way to get your project up and running. These are complete, ready-to-use solutions—with enclosures and accessories immediately available. You can start with small quantities; there are no minimum order requirements (no MOQ). This allows you to focus on developing your software and bringing your product to market quickly, without the hassle of hardware development costs or delays. Even if you require custom features down the line, starting with a standard product is often still the quickest path to building your minimum viable prototype.
Advantages:
- Fastest time to market
- No hardware development costs
- Enclosures included
- No MOQ
- Allows you to focus on software development
2. Customization
For small hardware tweaks
If our standard products meet most of your needs but require minor adjustments—like removing or replacing specific connectors—customization may be an option. We offer customization for customers ordering at least 50-100 units. Please note, we are unable to provide customizations for smaller orders, as it involves changes to the automated assembly process.
Typical customizations:
- Connector changes (removal or replacement)
- Removing hardware parts that are not required for your project
Requirements:
- Minimum order: 50-100 units (depending on board and complexity of the changes)
3. Co-Development
Collaborate on a product idea
Have an idea for a product that doesn’t exist yet, but might benefit a wider audience? Let’s talk! We’re always open to working together on new concepts that could be valuable for both your use case and other customers. Co-development involves a shared effort, and while it’s more flexible than full custom development, we still require a commitment of at least 50 units.
Ideal for:
- Unique product ideas
- Solutions with broader market potential
Requirements:
- Minimum order: 50 units
- Shared development effort
4. Custom Development
Fully bespoke hardware design
If co-development isn’t a good fit—whether because your idea is highly specialized, confidential, or you need a solution exclusively for yourself—we also offer full custom development. This is the most tailored option, but also the most time- and cost-intensive.
The process starts with an in-depth discussion about your requirements, followed by a proposed system architecture. Once the design is finalized, we’ll provide prototypes for testing. After your approval, we’ll move to series production. For complex boards, we typically require orders of 50 units or more, though 100+ units is standard.
Steps:
- Requirements discussion
- System architecture proposal
- Cost calculation
- Prototype production & testing
- Series production
Requirements:
- Minimum order: 50-100 units (depending on complexity)
- Higher development costs & longer lead time
